Shipping and ports go hand-in-hand as disruption to one creates a ripple effect for the other. Nowadays, the maritime industry has become increasingly digitalized with modern tools, however, as always in operations there are modern day threats. Currently, cyber-security threats to ships and ports are very real and the industry needs to stay ahead and stay safe. (ex Carnival Cruise Line, Mediterranean Shipping Company, Maersk, CMA CGM, ports of Barcelona and San Diego). It’s about taking the necessary steps to safeguard the fleet, port and business operations from current and emerging threats and vulnerabilities related to digitalization against cyber events, and to ensure continuity of operations.
Recent cyber attacks have demonstrated the vulnerability of shipping companies and port infrastructure. It is of paramount importance that the maritime authorities and port operators are well prepared and protected against cyber security threats, which, if not effectively prevented and managed, can lead to negative consequences (e.g. business disruptions, endangerment of port and shipping operations, endangerment of confidentiality, loss of intellectual property, business and information, etc.)
